How are the days until my birthday counted?

The tool finds the next time your birth month and day occur on or after today, then counts the whole days between today and that date. If the birthday is today, it says so.

Enter a date of birth and this tool tells you how many days until your next birthday, the age you will turn, and which day of the week that birthday lands on. It is handy for planning parties, booking time off or simply satisfying curiosity.

How it works

The tool takes today’s local date at midnight and builds a candidate birthday using your birth month and day in the current year. If that date has already passed, it rolls forward to the same date next year. The countdown is then the number of whole days between today and that next birthday:

days = (next birthday − today) ÷ 24 hours

The age you will turn is simply the year of the next birthday minus your birth year, and the weekday is read directly from that date. For a 29 February birthday in a non-leap year, the tool falls back to 28 February as the closest matching day.

Worked example

Suppose today is 30 May 2026 and your birth date is 15 June 2000. Your birthday this year has not yet passed, so the next birthday is 15 June 2026:

Now suppose your birth date is 10 April 1995 and today is still 30 May 2026. The April date has already passed this year, so the tool rolls forward to 10 April 2027. You would be turning 32, and the count would be around 315 days.

If today were the birthday, the tool recognises it and confirms it rather than showing zero days.

Planning uses

Knowing the weekday your birthday falls on is more useful than it sounds. Weekend birthdays make it easy to gather people without conflicting with work schedules. A mid-week birthday lets you plan a dinner reservation with shorter wait times. A Friday birthday is often ideal — the weekend stretches ahead. If a significant birthday (30, 40, 50) falls on a particularly inconvenient day, you can plan a celebration the weekend before or after with plenty of advance notice.

The countdown also works for tracking other people’s birthdays: enter a parent’s, partner’s, or friend’s date and share the result. It runs entirely in your browser — the date you enter never leaves your device.

The leap year edge case

People born on 29 February have a birthday only in leap years. In non-leap years the tool uses 28 February as the nearest matching day, so the countdown remains meaningful every year. Every four years (in a leap year) the actual 29th arrives and the correct date is used. If you were born on 29 February 1992, for example, your next “official” birthday falling on 29 February would be in 2028.
