How it works
The calculator takes the difference between today and your date of birth in three
parts. It subtracts the birth year, month and day from today’s, then borrows where
needed: if the day count goes negative it adds the number of days in the previous
month and drops one from the month count; if the month count then goes negative it
adds 12 and drops one from the years. Totals are computed separately from the raw
millisecond gap — total days, then weeks (days ÷ 7) and hours (days × 24).
The next birthday is your birth month and day in the current year, rolled to next
year if it has already passed.
Example
For a date of birth of 1 January 1990, on 30 May 2026 the calculator shows an age of 36 years, 4 months, 29 days, roughly 13,298 total days and about 1,899 weeks, with the next birthday on 1 January 2027.

When exact age matters
Most everyday uses of age are satisfied by the year alone. But several situations demand more precision:
- Medical and legal forms — many ask for age in years and months. The months figure also matters for paediatric growth charts, vaccination schedules, and drug dosing guidelines that change at specific age thresholds.
- Retirement and pension calculations — UK state pension age is reached on the exact day, not the tax year. Knowing the date-precise countdown can help with planning contributions and drawing down other savings in the right order.
- Age verification — platforms requiring proof that a user is over 18 (or 16, 13, or 21) need the precise age, not an approximation.
- Milestone curiosity — knowing you crossed 10,000 days alive on a specific Wednesday, or that you turn exactly 40 years old on a Tuesday, is a small but pleasing piece of information.
Why the months figure is not always obvious
Most people assume a month is about 30 days, but months range from 28 to 31 days, and the combination of your birth date and today’s date can produce slightly surprising results. For example, someone born on 31 January will, on 28 February, show 0 months and 28 days — not 1 month — because February never reached day 31. The calculator borrows from the previous month in these cases, which is the standard calendar-arithmetic convention.
Leap years add a further wrinkle: if you were born on 29 February, the calculator uses 28 February (or 1 March, depending on convention) for the birthday in non-leap years. The total-days count is not affected — it simply counts the raw number of days between the two calendar dates, including every 29 February in between.
