This is a live countdown to Christmas Day, showing the exact days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining until 25 December. There is nothing to set up — it reads your device clock and counts down in your local time zone, refreshing every second. It is perfect for an advent-style countdown on a phone, laptop or shared screen.
How it works
The timer builds a target at midnight on 25 December this year in your local time zone. If that moment has already passed (it is later in December or the new year has begun), it rolls the target forward to next year’s Christmas. It then computes the difference between that target and the current time and breaks it into days, hours, minutes and seconds, updating once per second from your device clock.
The arithmetic of Christmas
The four components of the countdown are computed from a single time difference:
total_seconds = target_time − current_time (in seconds)
days = floor(total_seconds / 86400)
hours = floor((total_seconds % 86400) / 3600)
minutes = floor((total_seconds % 3600) / 60)
seconds = total_seconds % 60
The target is midnight at the start of Christmas Day in your local time zone — i.e. the very first moment of 25 December, not midnight at the end. When total_seconds reaches zero, Christmas has officially arrived.
Example
If it is currently 1 December at noon, the countdown reads about 23 days, 12 hours, 0 minutes until Christmas. By 24 December at 11:00 pm, it reads 1 hour remaining. At the stroke of midnight the timer hits zero, and from that point it rolls forward to count toward next year’s Christmas.
Ways to use this countdown
Advent planning. Opening the countdown alongside an advent calendar helps track how many gifts, events, or tasks remain before the 25th.
Children’s countdown. The live seconds ticking makes the wait feel concrete rather than abstract — a “how many sleeps” question has a precise answer in days.
Shared screens and displays. The full-screen countdown works well on a TV or monitor at a Christmas event, retail display, or family gathering.
Shipping and preparation deadlines. Knowing exactly how many days remain helps with planning last postal dates, baking schedules, and event preparation.
The timer reads your device clock and updates every second. Once Christmas has passed, it automatically rolls forward to next year — all in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
