This tool gives you a live countdown to any date and time you choose — a product launch, a holiday, an exam, a contract deadline, or any personal milestone. Pick the target moment and watch the days, hours, minutes, and seconds tick down in real time. When the moment arrives, the display flips to counting up, so the tool doubles as an elapsed-time tracker after the event.
How it works
You select a target using a date-and-time picker, and the tool interprets it in your device’s local time zone. Every second it takes the difference between the current time and the target and breaks it into days, hours, minutes, and seconds. If the target lies in the future, the display counts down. Once the target passes, the same difference is shown as time elapsed — counting up from zero.
What you can target
The picker accepts both a date and a time, so you can count down to a specific moment rather than just a day:
- “31 December at 23:59” — a New Year countdown to midnight.
- “15 June at 09:00” — an exam starts at 9am.
- “20 August” — a travel date, counting by day to midnight at the start of the day.
- “Product launch at 14:00 UTC” — convert your UTC time to local time first, since the timer uses local time.
Before and after the target
Before: the display shows days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining with the timer ticking backward each second.
After: the display switches to “time since” and counts upward. This is useful for tracking how long a post has been live, how many days since a contract was signed, or how long a build has been running.
Example
Set a target of 31 December at 23:59. With roughly three days left, the display reads something like 3 days, 11 hours, 42 minutes, 18 seconds and ticks down steadily. The instant midnight arrives the counter hits zero and immediately switches to counting up — “0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes, 1 second since” — and continues climbing from there.
Practical uses for a countdown timer
Beyond the obvious — counting down to a holiday or a birthday — a countdown-to-date timer is useful in a surprising number of everyday situations:
- Project deadlines: “How many days until the report is due?” in precise days, hours, and minutes.
- Trial period tracking: counting down the 30 days of a free trial so you know exactly when to cancel or upgrade.
- Exam preparation: seeing 14 days, 6 hours remaining makes an abstract revision plan concrete.
- Launch day: counting down to a product launch time-zones can be confusing, but setting the target in your local time and watching it tick is unambiguous.
- Elapsed time: once a contract is signed or a policy starts, setting the target to its start date and letting it count up tracks exactly how long it has been active.
All timing uses your device clock and runs entirely in your browser. The date you pick is never uploaded or stored.
