How is the per-person amount worked out?

Does the tip apply before or after tax?

What is a normal tip percentage?

How it works

The calculation runs in three steps:

Tax = bill × tax% ÷ 100
Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100 (calculated on the pre-tax bill)
Total = bill + tax + tip, and per person = total ÷ number of people

The party size is always treated as a whole number of at least one, and every figure is rounded to two decimal places.

Example

An 80 pre-tax bill, 8% tax, 18% tip, split 4 ways:

Tax = 80 × 0.08 = 6.40
Tip = 80 × 0.18 = 14.40
Total = 80 + 6.40 + 14.40 = 100.80
Per person = 100.80 ÷ 4 = 25.20
