This free volume converter changes millilitres (mL) into US cups and back again, updating live as you type. It is aimed at cooking and baking, where recipes mix metric millilitres and US customary cups.
How it works
A US customary cup is defined as 236.5882365 mL, so the conversion uses that fixed factor:
- cups = mL ÷ 236.5882365 (i.e. mL × 0.004226752838)
- mL = cups × 236.5882365
The relationship is exact and linear, so the converter is bidirectional. Note this is the US cup — metric (250 mL) and imperial (~284 mL) cups differ.
Example
A recipe calls for 500 mL of stock and you only have a US measuring cup.
500 ÷ 236.5882365 = 2.113 cups, so a touch over two cups.
