This free digital storage converter changes megabytes (MB) into gigabytes (GB) and back again, in real time as you type. It is for anyone sizing a download, a backup, a cloud plan, or a video export, and uses the modern decimal (SI) definition that storage and bandwidth are sold under.
How it works
The tool applies a single fixed factor in the decimal system: 1 GB = 1000 MB, so the conversion is just division and multiplication:
- GB = MB ÷ 1000
- MB = GB × 1000
Because the relationship is exact and linear, the converter is bidirectional — edit either field and the other updates instantly. Some operating systems use the binary definition (1 GiB = 1024 MiB), which is why a drive’s advertised size looks smaller once installed.
Example
You have a folder of photos totalling 2500 MB and want to know if it fits a 2 GB upload limit.
2500 ÷ 1000 = 2.5 GB — so it is 0.5 GB over the limit.
| Megabytes (MB) | Gigabytes (GB) |
|---|---|
| 1 MB | 0.001 GB |
| 100 MB | 0.1 GB |
| 500 MB | 0.5 GB |
| 1000 MB | 1 GB |
| 2500 MB | 2.5 GB |
