BTU to kWh — heating and cooling energy
This converter changes British Thermal Units (BTU), common in HVAC, heating and appliance ratings, into kilowatt-hours (kWh) and back. It is handy for estimating energy use and running costs from a BTU rating.
How it works
Both units measure energy in joules, so the conversion is a fixed ratio. Using the International Table BTU (1055.05585262 J) and the kilowatt-hour (3,600,000 J):
1 BTU = 1055.05585262 ÷ 3,600,000 ≈ 0.00029307 kWh 1 kWh = 3,600,000 ÷ 1055.05585262 ≈ 3412.142 BTU
Pick a direction and the tool multiplies or divides by this factor.
Example
Convert 10,000 BTU to kWh:
10,000 × 0.00029307107 ≈ 2.9307 kWh
And 2 kWh back to BTU:
2 × 3412.142 ≈ 6824.28 BTU
| BTU | kWh |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | 0.293 |
| 5,000 | 1.465 |
| 10,000 | 2.931 |
| 100,000 | 29.307 |
