How is the brick count worked out?

The tool divides the wall area by the face area of one brick (its width and height including a typical 10mm mortar joint), then adds your chosen waste allowance and rounds up.

How many bricks are there per square metre?

For a single-skin wall with the UK standard 215×65mm brick plus a 10mm joint (0.225 × 0.075 m face), that is about 59 bricks per square metre. The US modular preset gives a slightly different figure.

Which brick sizes does it support?

Two presets: UK standard (215×65mm brick + 10mm joint) and US modular (194×57mm + 10mm joint). Both already include the mortar joint in the face area.

Why add a waste allowance?

Bricks break during cutting and handling, and some are lost to offcuts at corners and openings. A 5–10% allowance is standard so you do not run short mid-job.

Does it account for a double-skin (full-brick) wall?

No. The estimate is for a single skin (half-brick thickness). For a full-brick or cavity wall with two skins, double the result.

Can I enter feet instead of metres?

Yes. Switch the units to feet and the tool converts to metres (× 0.3048) before calculating the area.

How it works

The tool computes the wall area, then divides by the face area of one brick (width × height, mortar joint included):

wall area = length × height base bricks = wall area ÷ brick face area total = base bricks × (1 + waste% ÷ 100), rounded up

For the UK standard preset the face area is 0.225 × 0.075 = 0.016875 m², which is about 59 bricks per square metre.

Example

A 10 m × 2.4 m wall using UK standard bricks with a 10% waste allowance:

Wall area = 10 × 2.4 = 24 m²
Base bricks = 24 ÷ 0.016875 ≈ 1423 bricks
With 10% waste ≈ 1565 bricks
