How do I convert yards to meters?

Multiply the number of yards by 0.9144. For example, 1 yd equals 0.9144 m, and 10 yd equals 9.144 m.

Yards to Meters Converter

This free length converter changes yards (yd) into meters (m) and back again. It is the quick answer for sports field distances, fabric and carpet measurements, and anything where US/UK imperial lengths meet metric units.

How it works

The yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 meters, a fixed value set by the 1959 international yard agreement. So the conversion is a single multiply or divide:

  • Yards to meters: m = yd × 0.9144
  • Meters to yards: yd = m ÷ 0.9144

Both fields are linked. Type into Yards and the Meters value is computed with the factor; type into Meters and the Yards value is computed with the inverse — there is no rounding at the factor itself, only at display.

Common sports and everyday references

Yards appear constantly in US and British sports and construction, while metric countries use meters everywhere. Knowing the equivalents helps when following a game, ordering materials, or reading a technical spec from another country.

Why the factor is exactly 0.9144

Before 1959, the US customary yard and the British imperial yard differed slightly, which created headaches for engineering and trade between the two countries. The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 meters — no rounding, no approximation. This also fixed the inch at exactly 25.4 mm and the foot at exactly 0.3048 m. Because the factor is exact by definition, yards-to-meters conversions involve no measurement uncertainty at all, only arithmetic.

Worked examples

For example, a 9-yard roll of carpet converts to 9 × 0.9144 = 8.2296 m — useful when a supplier quotes in meters but a room was measured in yards. Going the other way, a 5-meter length of fabric is 5 ÷ 0.9144 ≈ 5.468 yd, which you can round to 5.5 yards when purchasing.
