How is the water intake calculated?

We start from roughly 35 ml of water per kilogram of body weight, add an allowance for activity, and apply a small multiplier for hot or humid climates. The result is shown in litres, US cups and fluid ounces.

This calculator estimates a personalised daily water target from your body weight, then adjusts for activity level and climate — useful for athletes, people in hot countries, or anyone wanting a number more grounded than a slogan.

How it works

The estimate starts from 35 ml of water per kilogram of body weight (imperial weight converts at 1 lb = 0.453592 kg). It then adds an activity allowance and applies a climate multiplier:

Results are shown in litres, US cups (÷ 236.588 ml) and fluid ounces (÷ 29.5735 ml).

Example

A 70 kg person, moderately active, in a temperate climate:

(70 × 35 + 350) × 1.0 = (2,450 + 350) = 2,800 ml = 2.8 L (≈ 11.8 US cups · 94.7 fl oz)

Food and other drinks also contribute to hydration, so this is a daily target rather than a strict plain-water quota.

Why 35 ml per kg — and where that figure comes from

The 35 ml per kilogram baseline reflects a commonly used clinical guideline for adult fluid requirements under resting conditions. The basis is that larger bodies generate more metabolic heat and produce more waste products that require water to excrete through urine. A 90 kg adult has more tissue producing metabolic byproducts than a 55 kg adult, so they need more fluid to maintain the same internal balance.

The figure is a starting point, not a precise prescription. Different sources use ranges from 30 to 40 ml per kg, and clinical guidelines for specific populations (elderly adults, people with kidney disease, those taking certain medications) often differ. The calculator uses 35 ml per kg as a practical middle of the common range.

The activity adjustment

Exercise increases fluid loss through two main routes: sweat and increased respiratory rate. The allowances used here — 350 ml for moderate exercise and 700 ml for high-intensity or prolonged activity — represent approximate additional losses beyond the resting baseline. For very long or very hot exercise sessions (marathon running, manual labor in summer heat) actual losses can be substantially higher. In those cases, weighing yourself before and after activity and replacing each kilogram of weight lost with approximately 1 litre of fluid gives a more accurate replacement target.

The climate multiplier

A 10% increase for hot or humid climates (the ×1.1 multiplier) accounts for the elevated baseline sweat rate in warm environments, even at rest. In mild or temperate climates the body’s temperature regulation system loses relatively little fluid at rest. In hot, humid conditions — where sweat cannot evaporate efficiently — the resting fluid loss is meaningfully higher. The 10% figure is a conservative estimate; in extreme heat (above 35°C with high humidity) the real additional requirement can be larger still.

Practical signals beyond the number

The calculator’s output gives a daily target to aim for, but two simple real-time signals tell you whether you are on track throughout the day:

Urine colour: Pale straw yellow indicates adequate hydration. Dark yellow or amber suggests you are running low and should drink now. Colourless urine suggests you may be over-hydrated, though this is less common.

Thirst: In healthy adults, thirst is a reliable signal that fluid intake needs to increase. The old idea that “if you’re thirsty you’re already dehydrated” is not well supported in current evidence — for most people thirst responds before significant dehydration sets in.
