Washington Sales Tax Calculator 2025
Washington charges a statewide base sales tax rate of 6.5% as of 2025, and unlike most states it has no state income tax. This calculator adds the tax to a pre-tax price or works backwards to strip it out of a tax-inclusive total. It is built for shoppers checking a receipt, sellers quoting a price, and anyone reconciling a Washington invoice.
How it works
To add tax, the calculator multiplies your price by the rate and adds it on:
total = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
To remove tax from a tax-inclusive total, it divides instead:
pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
The rate field defaults to the 6.5% Washington state base rate. Because local and county taxes stack on top in Washington, you can override the rate with your local combined figure for an exact total.
Example
A $100 item at the 6.5% base rate: tax = 100 × 0.065 = $6.50, so the total is $106.50. Working backwards, a $106.50 tax-inclusive total divided by 1.065 returns the $100.00 pre-tax price.
| Pre-tax price | Tax at 6.5% | Total |
|---|---|---|
| $20.00 | $1.30 | $21.30 |
| $50.00 | $3.25 | $53.25 |
| $100.00 | $6.50 | $106.50 |
Important: Washington’s statewide rate is 6.5%. Local taxes push the combined rate to 7.5–10.4% depending on location.
