Tennessee Sales Tax Calculator 2025
Tennessee charges a statewide base sales tax rate of 7% as of 2025, one of the highest state rates in the United States. This calculator adds tax to a pre-tax price or works backwards to strip tax out of a receipt total. It suits shoppers checking a bill, sellers quoting prices, and bookkeepers reconciling invoices.
How it works
The tool applies a percentage either forward or in reverse:
Add tax: total = price × (1 + rate/100), tax = price × rate/100
Remove tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate/100), tax = total − price
The rate field defaults to the 7% Tennessee state base rate and is fully editable — set it to your county/city combined rate (up to 9.75%) for a local figure. The grocery reduced rate is 4% at state level. Everything runs locally with no data transmitted.
Example
On a $100 pre-tax purchase at the 7% state rate: tax = 100 × 0.07 = $7.00, so the total is $107.00. To reverse it, a $107.00 inclusive total gives 100 ÷ 1.07 ≈ $100.00 pre-tax.
| Pre-tax price | Tax at 7% | Total |
|---|---|---|
| $20 | $1.40 | $21.40 |
| $50 | $3.50 | $53.50 |
| $100 | $7.00 | $107.00 |
Note: local option taxes add up to 2.75%, so combined rates reach 9.75% in some areas. Verify your local rate before relying on the state-only figure.
