Scientific notation converter
Convert numbers between plain decimal form and scientific notation (standard form) in both directions. It is handy for science homework, engineering, and reading very large or very small figures clearly — a number like 149,600,000 becomes 1.496 × 10⁸ and back again.
How it works
Scientific notation writes a value as a mantissa between 1 and 10 multiplied
by a power of ten. To convert a decimal, the tool finds the exponent as the
floor of log₁₀(|value|), then the mantissa as value ÷ 10^exponent:
149,600,000 → exponent 8, mantissa 1.496 → 1.496 × 10⁸
To go the other way it simply multiplies the mantissa by ten raised to the exponent:
1.496 × 10⁸ = 1.496 × 100,000,000 = 149,600,000
Zero is treated as 0 × 10⁰.
Example
| Decimal | Scientific notation |
|---|---|
| 149,600,000 | 1.496 × 10⁸ |
| 0.00042 | 4.2 × 10⁻⁴ |
| 6,022 | 6.022 × 10³ |
