Pennsylvania Sales Tax Calculator 2025
Pennsylvania charges a statewide base sales tax rate of 6% as of 2025. This calculator adds that tax to a pre-tax price, or removes it from a tax-inclusive total, and lets you override the rate for areas with extra local tax. It is handy for shoppers checking a receipt, sellers pricing an item, or anyone reconciling a total.
How it works
The calculator works in two directions using the rate you set (6% by default):
Add tax: tax = price × (rate ÷ 100); total = price + tax
Remove tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); tax = total − price
“Add” finds the tax and total from a pre-tax price; “Remove” works backwards from a tax-inclusive total to recover the pre-tax price and the embedded tax.
Example
A $100 pre-tax item at the 6% state rate, Add mode:
- Tax: 100 × 0.06 = $6.00
- Total: 100 + 6 = $106.00
In Philadelphia at the combined 8% rate, the tax would be $8.00 for a $108.00 total.
| Area | Combined rate | Tax on $100 |
|---|---|---|
| Statewide base | 6% | $6.00 |
| Allegheny County / Pittsburgh | 7% | $7.00 |
| Philadelphia | 8% | $8.00 |
Important: Pennsylvania’s state rate is 6%. Allegheny County adds 1% and Philadelphia adds 2%, raising combined rates in those areas. Groceries, prescription drugs, and clothing are exempt.
