North Carolina applies a statewide base sales tax of 4.75% as of 2025, with counties adding their own local rates on top. This calculator adds or removes sales tax at whatever rate you set, instantly and entirely in your browser.
How it works
The calculator uses your rate (default 4.75%) in one of two modes:
- Add Sales Tax — tax = price × (rate ÷ 100), and total = price + tax.
- Remove Sales Tax — the entered amount is the tax-inclusive total, so pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and the tax is the difference.
Because counties add 2% to 2.25%, set the rate field to your combined county rate (typically 6.75% to 7.5%) for a real-world total.
Example
On a $100 pre-tax purchase at the 4.75% state base rate:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Pre-tax | $100.00 |
| Sales tax (4.75%) | $4.75 |
| Total | $104.75 |
At a typical combined rate of 7%, the same $100 item costs $107.00. To reverse a tax-inclusive total in Remove mode, divide by 1 plus the rate.
Important: North Carolina’s state rate is 4.75%. Counties add 2-2.25%, bringing combined rates to 6.75-7%. Groceries are taxed at a reduced 2% state rate.
All calculations run entirely in your browser — no amounts or personal data are transmitted.
