New Jersey levies a statewide sales tax of 6.625% as of 2025, applied at the same rate in nearly every part of the state. This calculator adds that tax to a pre-tax price or removes it from a tax-inclusive total, instantly and entirely in your browser.
How it works
The calculator uses the rate you set (default 6.625%) in one of two modes:
- Add Sales Tax — tax = price × (rate ÷ 100), and total = price + tax.
- Remove Sales Tax — the entered amount is the tax-inclusive total, so pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and the tax is the difference.
New Jersey does not allow general local add-on rates, so for most purchases the 6.625% default is the full rate. In an Urban Enterprise Zone, change the rate to 3.3125%.
Example
On a $100 pre-tax purchase at 6.625%:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Pre-tax | $100.00 |
| Sales tax (6.625%) | $6.63 |
| Total | $106.63 |
To work backwards from a $106.63 total in Remove mode: $106.63 ÷ 1.06625 = $100.00 pre-tax.
Important: New Jersey’s statewide rate is 6.625%. Urban Enterprise Zones charge a reduced 3.3125% rate. Groceries, prescription drugs, and most clothing are exempt.
All calculations run entirely in your browser — no amounts or personal data are transmitted.
