This calculator adds or removes Minnesota sales tax at the state base rate of 6.875% (2025). It is for shoppers and sellers in Minnesota who need a fast, accurate figure, and it lets you raise the rate to include local add-ons.
How it works
Minnesota’s base state rate is 6.875%, and some cities and counties add up to about 2% on top. The calculator works in either direction at whatever rate you set:
- Add tax: tax = price × 0.06875; total = price × 1.06875
- Remove tax: net = total ÷ 1.06875; tax = total − net
The rate field defaults to 6.875% but is editable — enter your combined local rate for a more precise result. Groceries, prescription drugs and clothing are exempt from state tax.
Example
On a $100 pre-tax purchase at the base rate:
tax = 100 × 0.06875 = $6.88 (rounded); total = $106.88.
In a city adding 1.5% local tax (combined 8.375%): tax = 100 × 0.08375 = $8.38; total = $108.38.
| Pre-tax | State tax (6.875%) | Total |
|---|---|---|
| $50 | $3.44 | $53.44 |
| $100 | $6.88 | $106.88 |
| $250 | $17.19 | $267.19 |
