This calculator adds or removes Michigan sales tax at the state base rate of 6% (2025). It is for shoppers, sellers and bookkeepers in Michigan who need a quick, accurate tax figure on either a pre-tax or a tax-inclusive price.
How it works
Michigan applies a flat 6% state sales tax with no local add-ons, so the maths is straightforward:
- Add tax: tax = price × 0.06; total = price × 1.06
- Remove tax: net = total ÷ 1.06; tax = total − net
The rate field defaults to 6% but is editable, so you can model a different rate if your situation requires it. Groceries and prescription drugs are exempt from Michigan sales tax.
Example
On a $100 pre-tax purchase:
tax = 100 × 0.06 = $6.00; total = $106.00.
Working backwards from a $106.00 total: net = 106 ÷ 1.06 = $100.00, tax = $6.00.
| Pre-tax | Tax (6%) | Total |
|---|---|---|
| $50 | $3.00 | $53.00 |
| $100 | $6.00 | $106.00 |
| $250 | $15.00 | $265.00 |
