Inches to Feet Converter
This free length converter changes inches (in) into feet (ft) and back again. It is useful for reading heights, room dimensions, fabric lengths and construction measurements in whole feet.
How it works
One foot is defined as exactly 12 inches, so the conversion is a single division:
feet = inches ÷ 12
The converter works both ways: type in the inches field to divide by 12, or type in the feet field to multiply by 12 and get inches. Both update instantly as you type.
Example
To convert 36 inches: 36 ÷ 12 = 3 ft. A height of 70 inches is 70 ÷ 12 = 5.8333 ft, or 5 feet 10 inches.

Reading a decimal feet result as feet and inches
When a measurement does not divide evenly by 12, the result is a decimal. To express it as feet and whole inches, take the whole-number part as the feet and multiply the decimal remainder by 12:
- For example, 70 inches → 70 ÷ 12 = 5.8333 ft → 5 feet, and 0.8333 × 12 = 10 inches → 5 ft 10 in
- 55 inches → 55 ÷ 12 = 4.5833 ft → 4 feet 7 inches
This “whole part + remainder × 12” pattern works for any number of inches.
Where this conversion comes up
Heights and clothing sizes — US apparel and athletic sizing frequently mixes feet-and-inches and total-inch measurements. A 34-inch inseam is 2 ft 10 in; knowing both helps when checking size charts that switch between formats.
Screen and monitor sizes — Display dimensions are quoted in diagonal inches in spec sheets, but room-planning and cable runs are measured in feet. Converting the screen’s diagonal and bezel dimensions lets you judge whether it fits a wall recess or shelf.
Construction and DIY — Lumber is sold in foot lengths, but cut lists and pencil marks on a workpiece accumulate in inches. Running a total in inches and then converting at the end avoids repeated ÷ 12 mental arithmetic and the transcription errors that come from switching units mid-calculation.
Sports and athletics — Track-and-field throw distances, long-jump results, and vault heights are often reported in feet in US media but measured in metres or inches at the competition. A quick in-to-ft check helps decode the printed stats.
