Feet to Inches Converter
Both feet and inches are imperial units of length used widely in the US and UK for heights, room dimensions, furniture and DIY measurements. This free converter changes feet (ft) into inches (in) and back again, so you can switch between the two units a building plan, height chart or shopping spec might use. Type in either field and the other updates instantly — the converter works in both directions.
How it works
The relationship is exact and defined by the imperial system: 1 foot = 12 inches. To convert feet to inches the tool multiplies by 12; to convert inches back to feet it divides by 12. There is no rounding — both directions are exact because the 12:1 ratio is a defined constant.
Mixed feet and inches
A height like 5 ft 9 in isn’t a decimal number of feet, so the conversion takes two steps: multiply the whole feet by 12, then add the remaining inches.
For example: 5 ft 9 in = (5 × 12) + 9 = 60 + 9 = 69 inches total.
Going the other way, 69 inches ÷ 12 = 5.75 feet, or 5 feet with a remainder of 9 inches.
