Illinois Sales Tax Calculator 2025
Illinois charges a statewide base sales tax rate of 6.25% as of 2025. This calculator helps shoppers, freelancers and small businesses in Illinois work out exactly how much tax sits inside a price — whether you are adding tax to a quote or extracting it from a receipt total.
How it works
The calculator runs two modes. In Add mode it treats your figure as the
pre-tax price and multiplies by the rate: tax = amount × (rate / 100), then
total = amount + tax. In Remove mode it treats your figure as the
tax-inclusive total and works backwards: net = amount / (1 + rate / 100), so
the tax portion is amount − net. The rate field defaults to Illinois’s 6.25%
state base and can be edited to your local combined rate.
| Mode | Formula | Returns |
|---|---|---|
| Add tax | total = amount × (1 + rate/100) | pre-tax, tax, total |
| Remove tax | net = total / (1 + rate/100) | pre-tax, tax, total |
Example
A $100 pre-tax item at the 6.25% state base rate:
- Tax = 100 × 0.0625 = $6.25
- Total = 100 + 6.25 = $106.25
In Remove mode, a $106.25 tax-inclusive total divides by 1.0625 to recover the $100.00 net price and $6.25 of tax.
Important: Illinois levies a 6.25% state sales tax on most goods. Food and drugs are taxed at a reduced 1%. Local taxes can add 0.75-4.75% in Chicago and other jurisdictions.
