What does AH stand for?

AH means Anno Hegirae — "in the year of the Hijra", the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which is year 1 of the Islamic calendar.

Why is the Islamic year shorter than the Gregorian year?

The Islamic calendar is purely lunar: 12 lunar months total about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the 365-day solar year. That is why Islamic dates such as Ramadan move earlier through the Gregorian seasons each year.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

Months alternate between 30 and 29 days. In the tabular calendar the 12th month (Dhu al-Hijjah) has 30 days in leap years and 29 otherwise, giving 355 days in a leap year and 354 in a common year.
