How is a weighted GPA calculated?

Each course grade is converted to a grade point (e.g. A = 4.0 on the US scale), multiplied by its credit hours, and then divided by the total credit hours. Courses with more credits count more toward the result.

What grade points does the US 4.0 scale use?

A and A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7 and F = 0.0. These are the common US college points multiplied by each course's credit hours.

How does the India 10-point CGPA scale map letters to points?

O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P (Pass) = 4 and F = 0. Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of these grade points out of 10.

What's the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA usually refers to a single term or semester, while CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the weighted average across all terms. The maths is identical — this tool computes a weighted average of whatever courses you enter, so you can use it for either.

How do credit hours change my GPA?

Each grade is weighted by its credit hours, so a high grade in a 4-credit course moves your average more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. Courses with zero or blank credits are ignored.

How it works

Each course grade is mapped to a grade point, multiplied by that course’s credit hours, and summed. The weighted GPA is that sum divided by the total credit hours: GPA = Σ(gradePoint × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). Because of the weighting, courses worth more credits pull the average harder. On the UK setting, classes map to points (First = 1, 2:1 = 2.1, 2:2 = 2.2, Third = 3) and the result is labelled with the matching honours class. Blank grades and courses with zero credits are skipped, and the result only appears once at least one valid graded course is entered.

Example

Three US courses — an A (4.0) worth 3 credits, a B+ (3.3) worth 4 credits, and a B (3.0) worth 3 credits — give (4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 3.0×3) ÷ (3+4+3) = (12 + 13.2 + 9) ÷ 10 = 3.42 / 4.0.
