This calculator adds or removes Georgia sales tax. It defaults to the 4% statewide base rate for 2025, and the rate field can be raised to your local combined rate. It’s useful for estimating receipts, pricing items, or extracting the tax already baked into a total.

How it works

The calculator has two modes:

  • Add Sales Tax treats your input as the pre-tax price. It computes tax = price × rate ÷ 100 and total = price + tax. At 4%, the total is price × 1.04.
  • Remove Sales Tax treats your input as the tax-inclusive total. It computes pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) and tax = total − pre-tax. At 4%, divide the total by 1.04.

Because Georgia’s 4% is only the state portion, counties and special-purpose districts typically add 3-4% on top, so real combined rates are usually 7-8%. Update the rate field to match your location.

Example

A pre-tax price of $100 at the 4% state base rate, in Add mode:

  • tax = 100 × 0.04 = $4.00
  • total = 100 + 4 = $104.00 (before any local tax)

If your combined local rate is 8%, set the rate field to 8 and the same $100 item totals $108.00.

RateTax on $100Total
4% (state only)$4.00$104.00
7% (typical combined)$7.00$107.00
8% (typical combined)$8.00$108.00

Important: Georgia’s state sales tax rate is 4%. Local taxes (county + special purpose) typically add 3-4%, bringing combined rates to 7-8% across most of the state.
