Estimate any appliance’s running cost
How much does that space heater, fridge or gaming PC actually cost to run? The price isn’t on the device — it depends on its power draw, how long you use it, and your electricity tariff. This estimator turns those three numbers into a clear cost per day, month and year, plus the energy used in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
How it works
The calculation is the standard energy-cost formula. First it converts power and time into energy: kWh per day = wattage ÷ 1000 × hours per day. Then it multiplies by your price per kWh to get the daily energy cost and adds any daily standing charge. Finally it scales the daily total: × 30.44 for a month and × 365.25 for a year, both being calendar averages that account for varying month lengths and leap years.
Example
A 1500 W heater run 3 hours a day at 0.28 per kWh, with no standing charge:

Typical appliance wattages to know
Power ratings vary by model and age, but these ranges give a useful starting point for planning:

The wattage is usually printed on a sticker on the device or its power adapter. If only volts and amps appear, multiply them: watts = volts × amps.
Finding your price per kWh
Check a recent energy bill — it is usually listed as a unit rate in pence per kWh (UK), cents per kWh (US/Australia), or your local unit. If you have a time-of-use tariff with different day and night rates, use the rate that applies during the hours the device is actually running. The standing charge field is for the fixed daily fee your supplier charges regardless of usage; leave it at zero when you just want to compare the running cost of specific appliances.
Practical tips
- Compare before you replace. Run the estimator with the current appliance and again with the energy rating of a replacement model to see the annual saving.
- Multiply for multiple units. Running five identical LED strips? Just multiply the wattage by five, or run them as a single higher-wattage entry.
- Seasonal appliances add up. A dehumidifier or portable air conditioner running all summer for 12 hours a day can easily cost more annually than the appliance itself.
