Book cover prompt builder

A book cover has about two seconds to do its job on a crowded shelf or thumbnail grid: tell the right reader “this is your kind of book.” This builder turns a few choices — genre, tone, colour scheme and typography — into a clean, paste-ready prompt for Midjourney, DALL·E or Stable Diffusion, plus a checklist of the conventions that genre’s readers expect.

How it works

Each genre carries a visual grammar. Thrillers lean on high contrast, isolated figures and cold palettes. Romance favours warm light, couples or evocative objects, and soft script type. Sci-fi signals scale and technology; fantasy signals worldbuilding and ornament; literary fiction trends minimal and typographic. The builder maps your genre to those cues, layers on your chosen mood and palette, and asks the model to reserve clean negative space for the title and author — because AI text rendering is still unreliable, you add real typography afterwards.

Tips and notes

  • Design for the thumbnail. Most discovery happens at postage-stamp size on a retailer’s app. If the focal image and mood don’t read at 100px wide, simplify.
  • Add type separately. Generate art with space reserved, then set the title and author in a real design tool for sharp, correct lettering.
  • Study the bestseller list in your sub-genre before you commit — it shows you the exact conventions buyers are primed for this season.
  • Iterate the seed, not just the words. Once a composition works, re-roll with small wording changes to keep the layout while exploring palette and mood.
