Arizona applies a statewide base sales tax — technically the Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) — of 5.6% as of 2025. This calculator lets you add that tax to a pre-tax price or strip it back out of a tax-inclusive total, and you can override the rate to match your local combined rate. It is built for shoppers, sellers and bookkeepers who need a fast, accurate Arizona figure.
How it works
The calculator works in two directions using the rate you set (default 5.6%):
- Add sales tax: total = price × (1 + rate). The tax amount is price × rate.
- Remove sales tax: pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate). The tax already included is total − pre-tax price.
Arizona’s 5.6% is only the state portion. Cities and counties add their own TPT on top, so combined rates vary widely — Phoenix is about 8.6% and Scottsdale about 8.05%. If you know your local combined rate, enter it in the rate field for an accurate total.
Example
Add Arizona state tax to a $100 purchase at 5.6%:
- Tax = 100 × 0.056 = $5.60
- Total = $105.60 (before any local tax)
To remove tax from a $105.60 total: 105.60 ÷ 1.056 = $100.00 pre-tax.
| Rate | Pre-tax | Tax | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.6% (state) | $100.00 | $5.60 | $105.60 |
| 8.6% (Phoenix) | $100.00 | $8.60 | $108.60 |
| 8.05% (Scottsdale) | $100.00 | $8.05 | $108.05 |
Important: Arizona levies a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) at 5.6% state rate. City and county taxes add 0-5.6%, so combined rates vary widely. Phoenix is 8.6%, Scottsdale 8.05%.
