How it works
You enter two dates of birth. The calculator takes the calendar difference between them and breaks it down into whole years, then the remaining whole months, then the leftover days. It also computes the total number of days between the two dates as a single figure. The order does not matter — the result is always reported as a positive gap, and the tool tells you which person is older.
Worked example
Person A was born on 10 March 1990 and Person B on 22 July 1993.
- From 10 March 1990 to 10 March 1993 is exactly 3 whole years.
- From 10 March 1993 to 10 July 1993 is 4 whole months.
- From 10 July 1993 to 22 July 1993 is 12 remaining days.
The gap is 3 years, 4 months and 12 days — Person A is the older of the two.

What the numbers are useful for
The year, month, day breakdown is the most readable format for most purposes — spacing between siblings, age differences between colleagues, or comparing two people’s stages of life. The total days figure is useful when you need a single number for a calculation, such as working out what fraction of someone’s life they have shared with another person, or for comparing gaps across several pairs on a level footing.
Why a calendar-aware calculation matters
A naive approach might multiply years by 365 and add. The problem is that February has 28 or 29 days, and different months have 30 or 31 days. This calculator works from real calendar dates, so leap days are included in the total day count and the month-by-month breakdown uses actual month lengths. A person born on 1 February and another born on 1 March are exactly one calendar month apart regardless of whether February in that year had 28 or 29 days.
