Words to pages calculator
This calculator estimates how many pages a given word count will fill, based on your line spacing and font size. It is handy for planning an essay, checking a page-limited assignment, or sizing a report or manuscript before you start writing.
How it works
The estimate starts from a widely cited benchmark for 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, then scales for your chosen font size:
pages = word count ÷ (words-per-page × 12 ÷ font size)
The base words-per-page depends on spacing: 500 single-spaced, 375 at 1.5, and 250 double-spaced. A larger font fits fewer words per page, so the page count rises; a smaller font does the reverse.
| Spacing | Words per page (12pt) |
|---|---|
| Single | 500 |
| 1.5 | 375 |
| Double | 250 |
Example
A 2000-word essay, double-spaced at 12pt, divides by 250 to give 8 pages. The same 2000 words single-spaced (500 per page) fill about 4 pages. Switch to an 11pt font and the words-per-page rises (500 × 12 ÷ 11 ≈ 545), nudging the single-spaced estimate just under 4 pages.
