Words per minute typing test
This typing test measures your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy in real time. You type a sample sentence and watch your gross WPM, net WPM, and accuracy update live, with every correct and incorrect character highlighted as you go — so you can see exactly where you slip.
How it works
WPM uses the universal standard where one word equals five characters, which keeps the score comparable across different sentences regardless of the specific words used. The timer starts on your first keystroke, then:
WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed
Gross WPM counts every character you typed, while net WPM counts only the characters that match the sample at the right position, so errors drag it down. Accuracy is the share of your characters that match.

Worked example
Suppose you type 250 characters in 60 seconds with 5 mistakes. Gross WPM = (250 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 50 WPM. Net WPM counts the 245 correct characters: (245 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 49 WPM, at 98% accuracy.
How WPM scores compare

These are rough benchmarks. Many knowledge workers type in the 50–70 WPM range without ever formally practicing. Dedicated touch typists who practice regularly often push well past 80 WPM.
Why net WPM matters more than gross WPM
Gross WPM rewards pure finger speed regardless of errors. In practice, errors slow you down twice: once when you make the mistake, and again when you backspace to correct it. Net WPM captures the productive output — the characters that actually end up correct — which is what matters in real document work.
A typist who reaches 80 gross WPM at 90% accuracy is actually less productive than one who achieves 70 gross WPM at 99% accuracy, because the first typist’s net WPM after corrections is lower. Prioritising accuracy and letting speed develop naturally is the more effective training approach.
Tips for improving your score
Learn touch typing. Typing without looking at the keyboard lets your fingers learn the positions through muscle memory and dramatically raises both speed and accuracy over time. The home row position (index fingers on F and J, which have tactile bumps on most keyboards) is the foundation.
Slow down to speed up. Counterintuitively, focusing on hitting each key correctly at a slightly slower pace trains better habits than rushing and making frequent errors. Accuracy-first practice builds speed more effectively than speed-first practice.
Identify your problem keys. Watching which characters turn red in this test shows exactly which keys or transitions cause errors. Targeted practice on those pairs improves more quickly than repeated full-text practice.
Use consistent pressure. Heavy, stabbing keystrokes slow you down more than a lighter, rhythmic touch — especially on mechanical keyboards. Consistent keystroke pressure across all fingers also helps.
