How is the waist-to-height ratio calculated?

WHtR = waist circumference ÷ height, with both measured in the same unit, so the result is a unitless number. The well-known rule is to keep your waist below half your height (WHtR under 0.5).

The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is one of the simplest central-fat health screens available. It compares your waist circumference to your height to estimate how much fat you carry around the abdomen — a stronger predictor of metabolic risk than overall weight alone. The rule of thumb is memorable: keep your waist to less than half your height. It works for adults of any build and is often used alongside BMI.

How it works

The tool divides your waist by your height, both entered in the same unit:

WHtR = waist ÷ height

Because both measurements share a unit, it cancels out and the result is a plain unitless number — identical in centimetres or inches. Your ratio is then matched to a risk band, and the tool also shows your healthy waist ceiling, which is simply half your height (converted to centimetres for reference).

Example

Suppose your waist is 80 cm and your height is 175 cm. Then WHtR = 80 ÷ 175 = 0.457, which falls in the healthy band. Your healthy waist ceiling is half of 175 cm = 87.5 cm, so you have about 7.5 cm of headroom before crossing the 0.5 boundary.

WHtR versus BMI — what each measures

Body Mass Index (BMI) divides weight by height squared. It is a useful population-level tool but cannot distinguish where body fat is stored. Two people with identical BMI can have very different amounts of abdominal fat, and abdominal fat (visceral fat surrounding the organs) carries a higher metabolic risk than the same amount of fat stored in the hips and thighs.

WHtR captures this because it directly measures the waist — the circumference that reflects abdominal fat accumulation most closely. It also adjusts for height, which matters because a large waist on a tall person is proportionally different from the same measurement on a shorter person.

Neither metric is a substitute for clinical assessment; they are screening tools that can prompt further investigation.

How to measure your waist accurately

Measurement technique affects the result significantly. To get a consistent reading:

  1. Stand straight with feet shoulder-width apart and breathe out normally.
  2. Find the midpoint between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest) — usually at the natural waist, roughly level with the navel.
  3. Wrap the tape measure around your bare skin at this point, keeping it level and parallel to the floor.
  4. The tape should be snug but not compressing the skin.
  5. Read the measurement after breathing out gently.

Clothing adds false centimetres. Measuring after a large meal or at the end of a day can give a slightly higher reading than a morning measurement — consistency in timing helps if you are tracking changes.
