Torque N·m to ft·lb Converter
This converter changes torque between newton-metres (N·m) and foot-pounds (ft·lb) in both directions. It is most useful for following a torque spec — for example tightening wheel nuts or engine bolts — when your wrench and the manual use different units.
Why this unit mismatch is so common
European and Asian vehicle manufacturers typically publish torque specifications in newton-metres (the SI unit), while older American publications, many torque wrenches, and US-market service manuals often use foot-pounds. A mechanic working on a Japanese engine with a US-market torque wrench runs into this constantly. Getting the conversion wrong — or skipping it and guessing — risks under-torqued fasteners that loosen over time or over-torqued bolts that stretch, strip, or crack.

Practical tips
- Direction matters: always note whether the manual lists N·m or ft·lb before converting — converting in the wrong direction gives a wildly different number.
- ft·lb vs. in·lb: some smaller fastener specs are given in inch-pounds (in·lb), not foot-pounds. To convert in·lb to N·m, multiply by 0.11298. This converter handles ft·lb only.
- Calibration: even after a correct unit conversion, a torque wrench needs periodic calibration to read accurately. A 5% drift is common with heavy use.
