Turn your daily step count into an estimate of the calories you burned. Enter your steps, body weight, and walking pace, and the calculator works out the energy cost using established MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities.
How it works
The estimate is built in two stages:
- Steps to time. Steps are divided by an average cadence for your pace — 80 steps/min for slow, 100 for moderate, 120 for brisk — to get walking minutes, then hours.
- Time to calories. Energy use is
kcal = MET × weight(kg) × hours, where the MET is 2.8 (slow, ~3.2 km/h), 3.5 (moderate, ~4.8 km/h), or 5.0 (brisk, ~6.4 km/h). Weight entered in pounds is converted to kilograms first (× 0.453592).
Example at different body weights and paces
A 70 kg person walking 10,000 steps at a moderate pace:
- Time = 10,000 ÷ 100 = 100 minutes ≈ 1.667 hours
- Calories = 3.5 × 70 × 1.667 ≈ 408 kcal

What affects accuracy
Stride length and terrain. The cadence figures are averages. Taller walkers with longer strides cover more ground per step, and hilly terrain increases energy expenditure without changing step count. Fitness trackers that know your stride length can give a more refined estimate.
Individual metabolic variation. MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities are population averages. Fit individuals tend to burn slightly fewer calories at a given pace because their bodies work more efficiently. Carrying weight (a backpack, a baby) raises energy expenditure above these estimates.
Incidental steps versus sustained walking. 10,000 steps accumulated in three continuous walks burns slightly more than the same steps spread as a few at a time throughout the day, because sustained walking raises heart rate more than frequent small movements.
Putting the numbers in context
Walking burns energy at a modest rate compared to high-intensity exercise, but its sustained accessibility is its advantage. A daily 10,000-step habit at moderate pace is roughly 300–500 kcal per day depending on body weight — meaningful over weeks and months without requiring special equipment or recovery time.
For reference, 3,500 kcal corresponds roughly to a pound of stored fat in common health guidance (note: this is a general approximation, not a precise clinical figure). At 400 kcal per day of walking, that represents about nine days of consistent walking — illustrating why walking alone without dietary changes tends to show gradual rather than dramatic weight change.
