South Africa charges Value Added Tax (VAT) at a standard rate of 15% as of 2025, administered by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). This calculator adds VAT to a net price or extracts it from a tax-inclusive (gross) price, giving you the full net, tax, and gross breakdown.
How it works
The maths is a single multiply or divide:
- Add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate). The VAT itself is net × rate.
- Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). The VAT inside the price is gross − net.
With the default 15% rate, that is a multiplier of 1.15. The rate field is editable if you need to model a different figure.
Example
| Mode | Input | Net | VAT (15%) | Gross |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add | R1,000 net | R1,000.00 | R150.00 | R1,150.00 |
| Remove | R1,150 gross | R1,000.00 | R150.00 | R1,150.00 |
To remove VAT from R1,150: R1,150 ÷ 1.15 = R1,000 net, leaving R150 of VAT — the exact reverse of adding it.
The standard 15% rate was raised from 14% in April 2018. Zero-rated supplies, taxed at 0%, include basic foodstuffs and exports. Everything runs in your browser — no amounts or personal data are transmitted.
