The South Africa Severance Pay Calculator computes the statutory retrenchment severance owed under section 41 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), which applies when an employee is dismissed for the employer’s operational requirements. The core entitlement is simple and tenure-based: one week’s remuneration for every completed year of continuous service.
How it works
The severance formula is:
severance = weekly remuneration × completed years of service
If you enter monthly pay, the tool converts it to a weekly rate using the BCEA convention of
monthly × 12 / 52. Only completed years count — part-years are not credited toward severance
under the statutory minimum.
A retrenchment package usually also includes two separate entitlements, which the calculator can add for a combined total:
- Statutory notice pay, which is one week for under six months, two weeks for six months to under one year, and four weeks for one year or more of service.
- Accrued leave, paid out for any untaken annual leave at the time of exit.
Example and notes
An employee earning R12,000/month with 6 completed years of service has a weekly rate of
12,000 × 12 / 52 ≈ R2,769. Severance is 2,769 × 6 ≈ R16,615. With four weeks of statutory
notice that adds roughly 2,769 × 4 ≈ R11,077, and any accrued leave is added on top. Note that
an employee who unreasonably refuses suitable alternative employment may forfeit severance
under section 41(4). This tool gives the statutory minimum; a contract, collective agreement, or
the outcome of consultation may be more generous. It is an estimate and not legal advice. All
calculations run locally in your browser.
