Pirate Ship Name Generator

Fearsome names for scallywag sailing vessels

A pirate ship’s name is a flag of intent. The Bloody Revenge promises no quarter; Queen Anne’s Fury borrows the dread of Blackbeard’s own flagship. This generator combines menacing adjectives with nautical nouns to name vessels for games, stories, and themed events in the spirit of the golden age of piracy.

How it works

The tool rolls between four patterns drawn from two main pools. An adjective pool supplies the menace (Bloody, Cursed, Dread, Vengeful) and a noun pool supplies the substance (Revenge, Fury, Scourge, Kraken, Maelstrom). Most names use “The” plus adjective plus noun, the structure behind countless real privateer names. A possessive variant produces The Reaper’s Fury, and a captain variant attaches a period-appropriate name such as Queen Anne or Mary Read, echoing the historical Queen Anne’s Revenge. The fourth pattern combines all of these for grander flagship names.

Tips and example

  • Reserve a captain-named ship for a notorious NPC or villain; The Bloody Revenge of Bonny instantly implies a feared commander.
  • Pair the ship with a home port tavern so players hear rumours of the vessel before they ever sight its sails.
  • For a fleet, vary the nouns but keep a shared theme; a squadron of Tempest, Maelstrom, and Leviathan reads as one fearsome flotilla.

Notes

The combined adjective, noun, and captain pools generate hundreds of distinct names. Each batch is de-duplicated so all names in one list are unique.
