School & University Name Generator

Academic institution names for education demos

Ad placeholder (leaderboard)

Academic institutions name themselves after their founders, the places they serve, or the disciplines they are known for. This tool generates realistic school, college, and university names in all three styles for edtech demos, seed data, and fiction.

How it works

First choose a level — school, college, or university — which selects the right suffix vocabulary, from Academy and Grammar School up to Institute of Technology and Polytechnic University. Then pick a style: founder mode prepends a surname (Hawthorne Preparatory School), geographic mode uses a place name (Northfield University), and prestige mode appends a discipline (Summit College of Business). Prestige naming applies only to colleges and universities, matching real conventions. Each batch is de-duplicated.

Tips and notes

  • Geographic names are the safest for fiction because they rarely collide with one famous institution.
  • Prestige names imply a specialism, which is handy when your demo needs an engineering or business school specifically.
  • These are demo and mockup names — run a trademark check before using any in a public-facing edtech product.
