Fictional Era Name Generator

Historical epoch names for world-building timelines

Ad placeholder (leaderboard)

Every richly built world rests on a timeline, and a timeline needs evocative era names: the Age of Embers, the Third Silence, the Sundering. This tool generates fictional epoch names in the tradition of how real history is divided, blending thematic ages, numbered epochs, and single cataclysmic events so you can name the eras of your fantasy or science-fiction setting.

How it works

The generator offers three naming patterns. The Age of X pairs the frame “The Age of” with a thematic noun such as Embers, Ashes, or Wonders. The Nth Noun combines an ordinal like First or Third with an evocative noun, producing names such as The Third Silence. The Single Event names a turning point with a dramatic gerund or noun like The Sundering or The Long Night. Within each batch the tool avoids repeats so your timeline stays distinct.

Tips and notes

  • Alternate calm thematic ages with sharp single-event eras to give a timeline dramatic pacing.
  • Assign each era an in-world year range so events and characters can be dated against it.
  • Numbered epochs like The Second Dawn imply earlier and later ones, which can seed extra history for free.
