Pottery Clay Weight Calculator

Calculate clay needed for any wheel-thrown or hand-built piece

Balling up the right amount of clay is half the battle at the wheel. This calculator models your intended piece as walls plus a base, estimates the clay volume from your dimensions, and adds a realistic waste allowance so your starting ball matches the form you want.

How it works

The piece is split into a thin wall and a solid base disc. For a roughly cylindrical form:

wall volume = π × diameter × height × wall thickness
base volume = π × (diameter / 2)² × base thickness
clay weight = (wall + base volume) × density × (1 + waste%)

Bowls and plates flare, so the tool widens the effective wall surface; vases are treated as taller narrow cylinders. Density is about 1.95 g/cm3 for moist throwing clay, and the waste factor covers centering loss and trimming.

Example and tips

A straight-sided mug 10 cm tall and 8 cm across with 6 mm walls works out to roughly 350 to 450 grams of starting clay after a 25 percent waste allowance — which lines up with the common “about a pound for a mug” rule. Add 60 to 120 grams more for a handle, and weigh lids and spouts as separate balls. Over time, keep notes on your own pieces and adjust the waste factor to your throwing style.
