Philadelphia minimum wage and overtime in plain terms

Philadelphia does not set its own general private-sector minimum wage, so it follows the Pennsylvania state floor of $7.25 per hour, which is identical to the federal minimum. This calculator takes your hourly rate and weekly hours, separates the first 40 hours from any overtime hours, and checks each piece against the law so you can confirm your paycheck is correct.

How it works

Regular pay covers the first 40 hours in a workweek at your stated rate. Any hours above 40 are overtime, paid at 1.5 times your regular rate. The formula is:

regular_pay  = rate * min(hours, 40)
overtime_pay = rate * 1.5 * max(hours - 40, 0)
gross        = regular_pay + overtime_pay

For tipped workers, Pennsylvania allows a cash wage of $2.83 per hour as long as tips push the total to at least $7.25. The tip credit is the gap between the two: 7.25 - 2.83 = $4.42 per hour. If your reported tips plus cash wage fall below the full minimum across all hours, the employer must top up the difference, and the tool reports that shortfall.

Tips, examples, and notes

If you work 45 hours at $12 per hour, you earn 40 * 12 = $480 regular plus 5 * 18 = $90 overtime, for $570 gross. A tipped server paid the $2.83 cash wage who reports strong tips will usually clear the minimum, but a slow week can trigger an employer top-up. Overtime for tipped staff is computed on the full $7.25 base rate (so $10.875 per overtime hour) before the per-hour tip credit is applied, not on the lower cash wage.
