Which variety of Armenian does this use?

It uses Eastern Armenian, the standard form used in Armenia, with words such as հազար (thousand), միլիոն (million) and միլիարդ (billion).

This tool spells any whole number into Eastern Armenian words — the standard form used in Armenia. It is handy for invoices, cheques, learning and documents, and runs entirely in your browser.

How it works

The number is split into groups of three digits and each group is spelled with the hundreds, tens and units words, then joined to its scale word — հազար (thousand), միլիոն (million), միլիարդ (billion). The teens 11-19 use the joined տասն form (տասնմեկ, տասներկու … տասնինը), and for an exact one thousand the leading “one” is dropped so it reads simply հազար.

Example

The number 1234 is 1 thousand and 234:

1000հազար
200երկու հարյուր
34երեսուն չորս

Read together: հազար երկու հարյուր երեսուն չորս.

Eastern vs. Western Armenian numbers

Armenian has two literary forms — Eastern Armenian (Արևելահայerén), used in the Republic of Armenia, and Western Armenian (Արևمտahayerén), used in diaspora communities. The number words themselves are largely the same, but pronunciation and some spelling conventions differ slightly. This tool uses Eastern Armenian, the official standard of the Republic of Armenia and the form taught in Armenian schools.

The Armenian number structure

Armenian numbers are built in a left-to-right, largest-to-smallest pattern with no special agreement rules — which makes them simpler than Russian or Arabic in this respect. Key structural points:

  • Hundreds: հարյուր (100), երկու հարյուր (200) … ինն հարյուր (900)
  • Teens (11-19): formed with the prefix տասն joined directly — տասնմեկ (11), տասներկու (12), տասնեռ (13) … տասնինը (19)
  • Tens: տասն (10), քսան (20), երեսուն (30), քառասուն (40), հիսուն (50), վաթսուն (60), յոթանasun (70), ութanasun (80), իննanasun (90)
  • Dropped “one”: 1,000 is հազար (not մեկ հազար), matching a common convention across several languages

When written Armenian numbers are needed

  • Armenian banking: cheques and official transfer orders issued in Armenia require the taka amount spelled in Armenian words (and in AMD, the Armenian dram)
  • Legal contracts: notarised agreements in Armenia spell monetary values in full Armenian words
  • Armenian language learning: hearing and reading numbers is a foundational skill for learners at A1 level
  • Diaspora documents: community organisations and Armenian-language publications use Eastern Armenian as the written standard
