Which alphabet does this use?

It uses the official ICAO/NATO spelling alphabet: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and so on, plus the standard number words Zero through Nine.

Does it handle numbers and symbols?

Yes — digits are spelled out as One, Two, Three and so on. Characters that have no NATO code word, like punctuation, are shown in quotes so nothing is lost.

Why is it spelled Alfa and not Alpha?

The ICAO and NATO standard deliberately spells it Alfa, and Juliett with a double T, so that speakers of any language pronounce them correctly. Alpha could be misread as having a silent ph, and Juliet might lose its final T sound.

What is the difference between the NATO and ICAO phonetic alphabets?

They are the same 26 code words. The alphabet was developed for international aviation by the ICAO and adopted by NATO, so the terms NATO phonetic alphabet and ICAO spelling alphabet refer to the identical set Alfa through Zulu.

Why use a phonetic alphabet at all?
