How are the numbers calculated?

Each letter is mapped to a digit 1-9 using the Pythagorean system, the digits are summed and then reduced to a single digit. Vowels give the Soul Urge number, consonants give the Personality number, and all letters together give the Expression number. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept.

Name numerology is a centuries-old practice that converts the letters of a name into numbers and reduces them to reveal personality characteristics and life themes. This calculator uses the Pythagorean system to produce three distinct numbers — the Expression, Soul Urge, and Personality — each calculated from a different subset of the letters in your name.

How it works

Every letter is assigned a value 1–9 using the Pythagorean letter-to-number grid: A through I map to 1–9, J through R repeat 1–9, and S through Z map to 1–8. The assignment wraps every nine letters:

123456789
ABCDEFGHI
JKLMNOPQR
STUVWXYZ

Once you have the values, they are summed and then reduced by digit-addition until a single digit remains. For example, a total of 29 becomes 2+9 = 11, which stops at the master number rather than reducing to 2. The three special totals treated as master numbers are 11, 22, and 33.

The three numbers

Expression (Destiny) number — uses every letter in your full name. This is considered the most significant of the three: it describes your overall potential, life direction, and the path you are meant to walk.

Soul Urge number — uses only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U). In numerological tradition the vowels carry the inner voice, so this number is said to reflect your inner desires, deep motivations, and what truly matters to you beneath the surface.

Personality number — uses only the consonants. This represents the outward impression you make on others — what people observe before they know you well.

Worked example

Take the name David. The letters map as: D=4, A=1, V=4, I=9, D=4.

NumberLettersValuesSumReduced
ExpressionD,A,V,I,D4+1+4+9+42222 (master number)
Soul UrgeA,I1+9101+0 = 1
PersonalityD,V,D4+4+4121+2 = 3

A sum of 22 is kept as a master number rather than reduced to 4, because 22 holds special significance in the Pythagorean tradition as the “Master Builder.”

Choosing your name

Traditional numerology uses your full birth name as it appears on your birth certificate — this is considered your original energetic blueprint. Testing a nickname, a married name, or a stage name shows how that chosen identity shifts the numbers, which practitioners use to evaluate whether a new name aligns with desired goals. Capitalisation does not affect the result; spelling does, so two names that sound identical but spell differently will produce different numbers.

Numerology is a reflective tradition and a form of entertainment, not a science. Your name is processed locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.
