Greek mythology is one of the richest naming wells in the Western canon, spanning the Olympian gods, the elder Titans, mortal heroes, gentle nymphs, and fearsome monsters. This free generator draws authentic names straight from that tradition and pairs each one with a short, accurate note so you always know who or what you are naming.

How it works

The tool keeps curated lists organised by the five major categories of Greek myth. When you click Generate:

  1. It builds a pool from your chosen category, or merges all of them if you select All of myth.
  2. It draws one entry at random using the browser’s cryptographic random source.
  3. It displays the name alongside a one-line descriptor explaining the figure’s role.

So choosing Monsters might give you “Hydra — many-headed serpent of Lerna”, while Heroes might give you “Atalanta — swift huntress of Calydon”. The descriptors are drawn from the standard mythological sources, so they are dependable for worldbuilding notes.

Tips and example

  • Match the category to your need: Olympians for grand patrons, nymphs for graceful minor characters, monsters for antagonists.
  • The descriptor is a quick research shortcut — picking “Prometheus” for a fire-bringer or “Cerberus” for a gatekeeper reinforces the theme.
  • Reroll freely; with dozens of entries across five categories there is plenty of variety before any repeat.
  • Mythological names are public domain, so use them in fiction and games without restriction. Everything runs locally and privately.
