Hotel rates in Minneapolis look cheaper than the final bill because lodging carries one of the heaviest tax stacks in Minnesota. This calculator layers every applicable tax on a nightly room rate so you can see the true cost before you book.

How it works

Minneapolis lodging is taxed by three levels of government at once. The taxes are applied to the pre-tax room charge and added together:

  • Minnesota state sales tax6.875%
  • Hennepin County sales and transit taxes — about 1.15% combined
  • Minneapolis city sales tax0.5%
  • Minneapolis lodging tax3.0%
  • Downtown hospitality / entertainment tax3.0% (downtown hotels only)

For a downtown hotel these sum to roughly 15.525%. Hotels outside the downtown district skip the final 3%, landing near 12.525%. The tool multiplies the room rate by the effective rate for each night and by the number of nights.

Example

A $200 downtown room for 2 nights: the taxable base is $400. At the combined 15.525% rate the tax is about $62.10, for a grand total of $462.10 — over thirty dollars per night more than the headline rate.

Notes

Rates change as state and local governments adjust budgets and convention-center funding. Treat the result as a close planning estimate, confirm the exact rate on your final folio, and add any mandatory resort fees to the room rate before calculating for the most accurate total.
