Where this conversion actually comes up
The mL-to-tablespoon conversion is most common in two everyday situations:
Adapting international recipes. Most European, Australian, and UK recipe books give liquid and sauce quantities in milliliters. US cooks measuring with tablespoons and cups need a quick conversion. For example, a French vinaigrette specifying 30 mL of Dijon mustard translates to just over 2 tablespoons — easy to scoop without a measuring cup.
Medication and supplement dosing. Liquid medicines and dietary supplements often specify doses in milliliters on the label but are measured with a standard kitchen tablespoon at home. This is a safety-relevant conversion: 1 tablespoon is approximately 14.79 mL, not 15 mL, so for precise medical dosing always use a calibrated oral syringe rather than a kitchen spoon.
