This calculator uses the Los Angeles minimum wage of $17.28/hr and applies California’s daily-and-weekly overtime rules to compute your gross weekly pay. Enter your hours day by day, since California uniquely calculates overtime on a daily basis.

How it works

California overtime is computed per day, then summed:

  • Hours 0–8 in a day: regular pay (1.0x)
  • Hours 8–12 in a day: time-and-a-half (1.5x)
  • Hours over 12 in a day: double time (2.0x)

Weekly overtime also applies: any hours beyond 40 in the week that were not already counted as daily overtime are paid at 1.5x. The calculator applies the daily rule per day, which captures the most common cases.

Regular pay = regular hours x rate OT pay = 1.5x hours x rate x 1.5 Double-time pay = 2x hours x rate x 2.0

Example

A worker logs four 10-hour days at the $17.28 minimum:

  • Regular: 8 hrs/day x 4 = 32 hrs x $17.28 = $552.96
  • Overtime (1.5x): 2 hrs/day x 4 = 8 hrs x $25.92 = $207.36
  • Weekly gross: $760.32

Notes

California does not allow a tip credit — the full minimum wage applies regardless of tips. Certain LA industries (hotels, large employers) may have higher ordinance rates. This tool models the standard daily-overtime structure; complex situations (7th-consecutive-day rules, alternative workweek schedules) may differ. Verify with the California Labor Commissioner for edge cases.
