Knots, miles per hour, kilometres per hour, feet per second, and metres per second all measure the same thing in different worlds — the sea, the road, the lab, and the sky. This converter moves a single speed between all five units at once, using exact factors so the numbers always reconcile.

How it works

Every conversion is anchored to the SI metre per second. The input is converted to m/s once, then back out to each unit:

1 knot = 1852 / 3600 m/s = 0.514444 m/s (1 nautical mile = 1852 m)
1 mph = 1609.344 / 3600 m/s = 0.44704 m/s
1 km/h = 1000 / 3600 m/s = 0.277778 m/s
1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s

Because the conversions share a single base unit, the round trip is lossless: convert 10 knots to km/h and back and you recover exactly 10 knots.

Example and tips

A 25-knot wind is about 28.8 mph, 46.3 km/h, 42.2 ft/s, or 12.9 m/s. For mental maths, remember the chain 1 knot ≈ 1.15 mph ≈ 1.85 km/h. A racing yacht doing 18 knots is moving at roughly 33 km/h, while a 60 mph car is about 52 knots — handy when comparing a road speed to a vessel or aircraft figure.
