Kilojoules to calories converter
This tool converts food energy between kilojoules (kJ) and calories (kcal) in both directions. Many countries — including Australia and across the EU — print energy in kilojoules, while others, and most fitness apps, use kilocalories. The converter lets you read either label in the unit you think in.
How it works
It uses the exact thermochemical factor: kcal = kJ ÷ 4.184 (because one kilocalorie is defined as 4.184 kilojoules). To convert calories back to kilojoules it multiplies by 4.184 instead. Both fields are linked, so editing either one updates the other instantly.
Example
A muesli bar lists 900 kJ. To find the calories:
900 ÷ 4.184 = 215 kcal

When you actually need this converter
The most common situation is reading food packaging from Australia, New Zealand, or continental Europe. These countries label nutrition facts in kilojoules, while UK labels typically show both kJ and kcal, and US labels show only kcal (Calories). If you are tracking your diet in an app that uses kcal (like most do), you need to divide the kJ figure by 4.184 to get the number to enter.

The difference between calories (kcal), kilocalories, and joules
This is one of the most misunderstood areas in nutrition:
- A food calorie (the one on every nutrition label) is actually a kilocalorie (kcal) — 1,000 times larger than the scientific “small calorie”
- A joule is the SI unit of energy; 1 kilocalorie = 4.184 kilojoules (kJ)
- Food labels in kilojoule countries list kJ, but the figure looks roughly 4× larger than the equivalent kcal figure
So when an Australian biscuit says 800 kJ, that is about 191 kcal — not 800 kcal. It is easy to misread and think something is far higher-calorie than it is.

Daily reference values in both units
Many food labels reference a 2,000 kcal (or 8,400 kJ) daily intake as a benchmark. Using this converter: 2,000 kcal × 4.184 = 8,368 kJ — close to the rounded 8,400 kJ figure that appears on Australian and EU labels. The small difference is just rounding.
